Hepatic vagus nerve activity has recently been shown to protect hepatocytes from Fas-induced apoptosis via activation of alpha7 nAChRs (Hiramoto et al., 2008). Thus, nicotine seems to exert a general pro-survival action not only on neurons but also on non-neuronal cells, suggesting that the protection offered by nicotine against Abeta toxicity may therefore simply be the result of a general pro-survival response. Indeed, activation of the TNFR family member CD95 (also known as FAS) can induce IL-1β processing that is independent of inflammasomes and of caspase 1 (REF. 59). PubMed:23702978
